With the release of tvOS 18, Apple continues to refine its offering for Apple TV by introducing smart features that enhance both the cinematic experience and integration with the smart home.
This update introduces new features like 'On Screen,' which displays real-time information about actors, music, and characters in the content being watched, while also making home control more intuitive through the Home app."

Apple TV and Smart Home: What's New with tvOS 18

New Features for the User Experience (UX)

The "On Screen" function is one of the main innovations of tvOS 18.
It allows users to enrich their Apple TV+ viewing experience by getting additional information about the actors, characters, or music in a program. This feature is especially appreciated by those who like to learn more about what they are watching without leaving their screen.

The enhancement of the "Enhance Dialogue" function leverages artificial intelligence to provide better voice clarity, particularly in films and series where soundtracks can sometimes overpower the dialogue. This feature should appeal to those who struggle to distinctly hear conversations in content with complex audio.

Intelligent Subtitle Management

tvOS 18 also offers more intuitive subtitle management.
Subtitles automatically appear in several scenarios: when a user mutes the sound, rewinds, or when the content’s language does not match the one set on the device. This flexibility helps make the viewing experience smoother and more accessible.

A Strengthened Role in the Smart Home

With this update, Apple TV 4K becomes a central hub in the smart home. Thanks to integration with iOS 18, it is now possible to grant temporary access to guests to control certain smart devices like smart locks, garage doors, and security systems. This access management is not only secure but also easy to configure for users.

Additionally, the Home app is now capable of monitoring the energy consumption of connected devices, in collaboration with utility companies like Pacific Gas & Electric Company.
This new feature allows for more refined and responsible energy management, contributing to better optimization of costs and consumption.

Audio Improvements with AirPlay and SharePlay

The audio experience has also seen notable improvements with tvOS 18. AirPlay now supports Spatial Audio, offering total sound immersion for users of HomePod or other compatible devices.
The integration of this technology allows users to enjoy enhanced audio quality when streaming from an iPhone or iPad.
Moreover, with SharePlay, all guests can now share control of music being played via Apple Music on a HomePod, making listening sessions more collaborative and social.

Revamped Apple Fitness+ App

The Apple Fitness+ app has also been redesigned in tvOS 18.
This update now offers personalized recommendations, improved trophies, and easier navigation to help users reach their fitness goals.
The interface is more intuitive, making for a more enjoyable and motivating user experience.

A More Refined Cinema Mode

For movie lovers, tvOS 18 will, by the end of the year, offer support for the 21:9 format, ideal for watching films on a projector.
New screensavers, including one inspired by Snoopy, will also enhance the visual experience, offering a more personalized and entertaining touch, even when the device is in sleep mode.

tvOS 18 marks another step in the evolution of Apple TV, offering subtle but welcome improvements, both in terms of user experience and smart home integration.
While this update doesn't fundamentally disrupt the Apple ecosystem, it strengthens Apple TV's position as a tool for entertainment and smart home management, making its use smoother and more practical.
